Miss Beatrix by Bernadeth Gutierrez

My name is Bernadeth, I live in a country where it’s always summer all-year round, the Philippines. I own a blog called “Miss Beatrix” and the name itself has nothing to do with my name but the meaning says it all, Beatrix means voyager and blessed. My blog has been running since 2010, but I am always on hiatus because of school but right now, I try to post as much as I can.My blog has been featured on several websites including Teen Vogue and Candy Magazine. (see more under the ‘press’ category on the blog). Hopefully this year will be a good year for me and my blog!

Please tell us something about yourself. Is blogging your profession or just a hobby?

I have never talked about my private life online because I feel like it’s a your own secret world when you’re a blogger but I wanted to make this interview very special so here it goes, I am currently working in the hotel industry and trying my best to save money to travel as much as I can, but I’ve always been dreaming of to studying abroad *fingers crossed*.

My blog is actually just part of my hobby, I’ve always enjoyed posing for the camera to take photos of my OOTDs and eating out then featuring it on my blog — I think it’s gonna be helpful to everyone who’s having a problem deciding what they should wear.

When did you get an idea to launch your own blog and how important is it for you be online?

This all started during the time Friendster was still the youth’s facebook, all those tweaking of layouts and making it look like your own website kind of push me to get my own and so, I did. Very important! Not a day goes by without me being in front of my computer and going online because I need to check on my e-mail, facebook, blog comments etc. It’s like I’m missing a part of me when I don’t open the internet.

Did you have someone help making the website or did you do it by yourself?

I actually learned all by myself how to setup a blog! At the age of 14, I actually learned all about HTML, CSS, a little thing about Javascript etc. it took me a while to get the blog I’ve always wanted but all those reading of codes I couldn’t figure out at first was worth it. Imagine a Tourism student setting up a blog all by herself! It was tough but the result? My own personal diary.

The right domain name is important. How long did it take you to come up with the domain name for your blog?

The word “Beatrix” always pop into my head, I don’t know why but it’s because I’ve watched Harry Potter a bajillion times and the name “Bellatrix” was stuck into my head and like it’s some sort of a magical word. And when I searched the meaning of Beatrix, the meaning is what defines me. So, I decided to use that and now, everyone would just call me “Bea” or “Beatrix”!

What CMS (Content Management System) do you use on your website? How hard is it to navigate within your CMS (making a new post, inserting images, moderating comments, etc.)?

I use Blogger as my hosting site so, everything’s done using it. The way you make your blog post through Blogger is very easy and always keeps everything organized.

What kind of Theme do you use on your website and what are the “must have” plugins you would recommend?

Right now, I’m using a layout that I purchased from Etsy but I tweaked it a bit so that it will look personalized. I am very much in love with it because it’s so clean and organized, just the way I like. I don’t use a lot of plugins because I wanted to keep my layout as clean as possible but top three plugins that should be on your blog? Instagram, Google Connect (if you have a blogger site) and image rollover so, you can feature two different photos in your profile page.

How much time do you spend blogging?

It usually takes me about 2-3 hours to finish a post, that will also include choosing and editing photos. I usually save my posts as a draft first during my day-offs then I’ll publish it once I’m home from work (usually when I’m from a morning shift).

How do you promote your blog? Do you use social media channels to attract more visitors to your blog?

I totally use other social media channels to promote my blog because it’s the easiest way to introduce my blog — not to mention, it’s also free. Sometimes, I would also collaborate with other shops and participate in events.

Is there a way to monetize (make money) through a blog?

I have been making money through my blog for quite some time now but I wouldn’t say it could satisfy my shopping needs. It will take some time for shops to offer or hire you for a certain project so, you should keep your blog active as much as you can.

Would you encourage other people to make their own blog/website/online business?

Totally! But always remember that you have to put your time and effort, having a blog is not just an idea of having a website, having a blog is having some sort of personal diary that you can let your friends, family and other people see.

Please give us some advice for new bloggers and for people who are still not sure should they start a blog of their own?

Putting up a blog is a serious thing because half of your life would be revealed but also, having a blog is fun because you get to show them a peek of your life. Although blogging will just be a hobby of yours, it still requires a lot of time and effort and maybe that’s the reason why I don’t have a boyfriend hahaha!
