Visions of Vogue blog by Jenna Colgrove

Hi! My name is Jenna and I write Visions of Vogue, a fashion blog! I started Visions of Vogue as an outlet to explore my creativity. I work as a finance manager for a video game publisher during the day so I needed a break from Excel spreadsheets and formulas! Fashion is such a critical part of my life (I shop online a LOT) that it seemed natural to start a blog about it.

DSC_0055-CopyPlease tell us something about yourself. Is fashion blogging your profession or just a hobby?

It’s just a hobby (for now)! I would love the opportunity to make it into more though – just trying to figure out what that career path would look like!

When did you get an idea to launch your own blog and how important is it for you be online?

My fiancee actually encouraged me to start a blog! His sister is a fashion blogger so he totally convinced me I did have what it took!

Did you have someone help you make the website or did you do it by yourself?

I did it completely on my own (with the help of Google). I would love to have a professional or even an expert take a look at it and help me fix a few things eventually but I thought it was most important to just get it up and running to start!

Spring-Whites-5The right domain name is important. How long did it take you to come up with the domain name for your blog?

It took a few weeks. I thought of a ton of names that either sounded good or resonated with some of my interests. I asked a trusted few for their opinions and finally settled on Visions of Vogue.

What kind of Theme do you use on your blog and what are the “must have” plugins for a blog?

I use the Brunelleschi theme – I like things really simple and I wanted my photos to be the highlight of my blog. Whenever I read other blogs, I’m mostly interested in the photos (I’m obviously a visual person) so I wanted my blog to be centered around them! I have a Custom CSS plugin that I use religious as I figure out how to code HTML and change minor things about the theme. I also use the WordPress Jetpack for basic analytics!

How much time do you spend blogging?

The most time consuming part is taking the photos! That probably takes 2 hours a week to plan outfits and snap a few shops. Editing photos takes 1 hour a week – I lose patience fast but totally wish I had more knowledge of Photoshop! Putting together the post and writing a blurb takes another hour so all in all, 4 hours for my blog. However, I spend countless hours a week reading other blogs for inspiration!

How do you promote your blog? Do you use social media channels to attract more visitors to your blog?The-Kimono-2-791x1024

I use Twitter most, then Instagram (which is also my personal account) and a little Facebook.

Is there a way to monetize (make money) through a blog?

Yes. Sites like Reward Style or ShopStyle make it relatively easy to sign up. I currently prefer ShopStyle as I don’t have the star power of the major bloggers to convince someone to buy what I’m wearing immediately!

Would you encourage other people to make their own blogs?

Yes, I totally would! I think it’s always great to see people stepping outside their comfort zones and exploring what they are capable of!

Please give us some advice for new bloggers and for people who are still not sure if they need a blog of their own?

Do you think you would enjoy it? If so, do it. Don’t let anything or anyone else hold you back – you’ll figure out the rest!
