The Mel Division blog by Melanie

Her name is Melanie Pangilinan, a 22-year-old personal style blogger from New Jersey and a creator of The Mel Division.

While juggling her academics to receive a doctorate degree, a part-time job, research projects, side job as a web designer and other after-school duties, she enjoys blogging as a hobby for her passion for fashion. Thanks to blogging she has been given so many wonderful opportunities such as being featured in a full-page advertorial of a Nylon magazine issue, style TV correspondent during NYFW for Herve Leger  and BCBG Max Azria shows, choosing out looks to walk the adidas Neo Label runway, invited as a guest speaker at the Teen Vogue Haute Spot, and preview the showrooms of collections like Camilla, Tt Collection, and Yosi Samra. With over 7000 Chic Points on Chictopia.com she says: “who cares if there’s already so many similar blogs out there!? I blog because I love it. I like to stand for petite bloggers who have difficulty finding their size.”  Let’s hear her story!

Now, tell us a bit about yourself and your love for fashion.

Hey! Most people call me Melanie or Mel. I love it by the Jersey shore and am currently in graduate school pursuing my doctorate degree. I have always loved fashion since I was little because I just love clothes and styling them.

What inspired you to make your own blog?

lilyLike many, I was inspired by other girls who had amazing taste in fashion through Lookbook. I wanted to start my own blog like them, which also gave way to a creative outlet for myself.

Did you have any professional help or did you created it yourself?

I created my blog all on my own. I used to web design when I was younger, which is why it was easy for me to get the hand of creating my own website.

Is it possible to make money from a  fashion blog?

It IS possible to make money out of fashion blogging but don’t depend on it unless you are lucky. Honestly, you can’t make a living on it unless you’re lucky and have a lot of viewers. For me, fashion blogging is a hobby but it has allowed me to earn a bit more allowance in my pocket.

You have a lot of followers to your blog – congrats on that! How did you do this? How important do you think social media is as a part of promotion and how do you promote your website?

Thank you! I honestly don’t think I would have made it this far. It takes dedication and commitment to run a successful blog. You have to keep your audience captivated but also stay true to yourself. I believe social media is very important in promoting yourself and your blog because that is what gets you more exposure.

How active are you on a weekly basis? How often do you post and communicate with your followers?

When I am in school, I only have to post once a week. I wish I could post more often but I honestly don’t have enough time. However, I do post more often during my in-between semester breaks and when I can’t post on my blog, I try to communicate with others through Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter.

What would you say that is the biggest challenge about fashion blogging?

The biggest challenge about fashion blogging is not letting the amount of readership you want to have get to your head. It will only make you crazy, trust me. Blog for yourself and don’t let the pressure of not having enough followers eat you up.

How would you describe your own personal style and is there a person who is a fashion inspiration to you?

Hmm, my personal style is always changing but if I had to sum it up in one word, it would be comfortable. Despite all the pretty outfits one can create, you have to be practical because are you honestly going to wear an outfit all day that makes you itchy and suffocates you? On top of comfort, I like my style to also be pretty, sophisticated, edgy, or preppy. My fashion inspiration comes from looks off the runway and fashion bloggers.

What would you say that is the greatest satisfaction of being a fashion blogger (gifts, invitations to fashion events, interaction with people, etc.)?

The greatest satisfaction of being a fashion blogger is having the opportunity to be involved in fashion events because although I did not pursue the fashion industry, it was always a dream to be a part of.

The biggest tip you have for anyone wanting to start a fashion blog or a website would be… ?

Dress how you want to dress! Also, save up for a nice camera!
