Photography Tips by Expert Fashion Bloggers

First Site Guide has a lot of general material out there for people just getting into blogging, and for experienced bloggers ready to get their first professional site up and running. We tell you how to get your blog started, from concept to selecting a name and installing your blogging platform. We also talk a lot about what plugins and themes you’ll need. That’s good enough for general purpose blogging, but there’s always a little more to talk about, or special areas of interest worth touching on.

The fact is, fashion blogs have to look good. There’s just no way around that. Bad pictures can take the most fashionable items and turn them into drab, boring, forgettable junk. But we’re blog people, not photo people, so how can we help you? Well, First Site Guide found some photo people. Not just any photo people, either, we talked to some of the very best expert fashion bloggers to get their hot tips for the best fashion photography. We asked them what cameras they used, and what lenses they used, and we’ve provided links to each of their sites, so you can see what they do, and how they do it, for yourself.

This is just where you start. It will take you time and effort to get really good at this, because, hard as it is to create beauty, it’s no small task to capture it, either.

Q: Do you need a professional camera in order to succeed in a Fashion Blogging World?
A: This is a tricky question! I don’t think you need a camera to get started, but over time, you might find that you want something more than just a simple point and shoot. Having a DSLR with different lenses expands what you can do on your blog. That being said, I don’t think a professional camera is necessary to succeed in fashion blogging.
Q: What type of camera are you suggesting to a new blogger?
A: I currently have a Nikon D5000, which is a fine and reliable entry-level DSLR. I purchased it because my dad is also a phtoographer and uses Nikon, so I get his hand me downs. Typically people are brand loyal to either Nikon or Canon, so it’s a bit odd for me to suggest what I’m about to suggest. I think the Canon EOS Rebel T3i DSLR is a great starter DSLR, especially if you want to get into making videos as well.
Q: Are there any special lenses that you prefer and would recommend?
A: I do most of my shooting with a 55mm lens. I also have a 28mm lens that I like to use at jewelry events or whenever I want to take detailed photos. Lenses aside, if you plan to shoot at events where it’s dark and you can’t rely on the light, I recommend an external flash.

Q: Do you need a professional camera in order to succeed in a Fashion Blogging World?
A: No. There are a lot of creative ways to create beautiful images for a blog. The key is ‘professional photos’ but ‘quality photos’.
Q: What type of camera are you suggesting to a new blogger?
A: Depending on what kind of blogger you are, just your smart phone could be a good start. If you are thinking about getting a DSLR, any of the Canon entry level DSLRs are great, but make sure you get yourself a decent lens. Forgo the useless kit lenses and get yourself a 50mm f/1.8 lens. It’s only $150 online.
Q: Are there any special lenses that you prefer and would recommend?
A: I recommend prime lenses for all beginner photographers and bloggers, because you can easily achieve the blurred out background that instantly makes a photo look ‘professional’. If you’re on a budget, the 50mm f/1.8 is great value. If you get very serious later, then you might think about the 85mm 1.2, which is a major investment at around $2000.

A: Not particulary. A fancy camera doesn’t mean beautiful photos. Photography is a something you need to understand. The best advice I can give is invest in learning your camera and all the settings. You can always upgrade with different lenses later.
Q: What type of camera are you suggesting to a new blogger?
A: I use the Canon 650D.

Q: What type of camera are you suggesting to a new blogger?
A: To a new blogger I’d suggest any digital SLR camera. My first camera was far from a top model., but I managed just fine. Besides when you first start you’re in the learning phase. I’d suggest investing money in lenses instead, as they can do a lot for your photos.
Q: Are there any special lenses that you prefer and would recommend?
A: I recommend starting off with a 50 mm f/1.4 or 1.8 lens (last one is cheaper). Then you get the debth-effect that most fashion bloggers crave. They are good lenses, that take in a lot of light. The 1.4 really opened up a new world of photography for me.

A: I have been shooting full frame for over 6 years beginning with the original 5D and I am love with my current 5D Mk3.
Q: Are there any special lenses that you prefer and would recommend?
A: Canon brand is my favorite, due to their set of L series lenses. So I have preference there. Honestly unless you are shooting full frame focus on the lens more than the camera. Canon 50mm 1.4 is the best $350 you’ll ever spend.

A: Canon DSLR I use the 5d Mark ii but anything full frame is great. The rebel series is great to learn on and practice with.
Q: Are there any special lenses that you prefer and would recommend?
A: For fashion photographer a prime lens (ie. no zoom) works best to create that shallow depth of field highlighting the subject and/or details.

Stephanie Brown   www.faiiint.com

Bio: I am obsessed with the darker things in life & this is reflected in my style. I stick to a mostly black palette, with the occasional muted tones thrown in & love to combine more structured pieces & sharp tailoring with softly draped jerseys & silks. I’m a sucker for interesting textures & finishes, and enjoy playing with layering them up to keep my usual all-black looks interesting.

Q: Do you need a professional camera in order to succeed in a Fashion Blogging World?
A: I don’t think you need one, but it definitely helps to have nice clear photos & getting one does make that easier.
Q: What type of camera are you suggesting to a new blogger?
A: I recently brought a Nikon d610 & for me it’s perfect. I think if you’re just starting out though & want a camera purely for blogging then it’s a little too expensive to go investing in one right away. You can get nice photos with most digital cameras with good lighting & a little editing, so I’d recommend using what you have or getting a cheaper entry level DSLR like the Nikon D3300 first.
Q: Are there any special lenses that you prefer and would recommend?
A: I love my 50mm it’s a really great all rounder.

Q: Do you need a professional camera in order to succeed in a Fashion Blogging World?
A: Yes.
Q: What type of camera are you suggesting to a new blogger?
A: We suggest to use a DSLR camera but you better can invest in a good lens than a good body.
Q: Are there any special lenses that you prefer and would recommend?
A: For the budget bloggers we definitely recommend the Tamron 70-300mm lens. It’s perfect for beginners and we have that lens too and are very satisfied with it.

Bio: I have been a photographer for 10 years and a personal style blogger for 5.

Q: Do you need a professional camera in order to succeed in a Fashion Blogging World?
A: No.
Q: What type of camera are you suggesting to a new blogger?
A: I think an entry level DSLR is always easier. And with the appropriate lens you should be fine. However, well edited iPhone photos can work too! It’s more about the editing and you can even use VSCOCam (or another iPhone app) to edit your photos on your phone if you don’t want to try and figure out photoshop (which is unnecessary).
Q: Are there any special lenses that you prefer and would recommend?
A: You should get a 50mm 1.8 lens (either Canon or Nikon) and shoot at 1.8 or 2.8, nothing higher. THAT is what will make your photos look great.

A: 50mm.

A: Nikon D610.
Q: Are there any special lenses that you prefer and would recommend?
A: F1.8.

  1. Hi. I just recently got into blogging, mostly for fun. I’ve been interested in buying an entry-level DSLR for months now and have read countless articles and talked to many peers..THIS is hands down the most informative and helpful post I’ve come across. Thank you and thank you to all of the amazing bloggers for sharing their tips and success stories.

  2. I’d have to agree with Genuinely Julia. This has been by far the most helpful article i’ve come across. I’m starting an online shop for vintage/curated home goods and I wanted to do all the photography myself. Since I’m basically an amateur, I’ve been researching what the best camera to get would be (as well as lens). This has helped narrow it down a bunch!
