Bring back the Screen Layout option in WordPress

Before WordPress rolled out version 3.8, you could have easily change your dashboard layout. It was enough to open screen options located on top of the page where you had the opportunity to click on the radio button and choose a number of columns for your dashboard.

After the aforementioned version, the options has been removed. But if you want it back, continue reading because in this article we’re about to show you how.

Bring back the screen layout option:

    1. Open function.php file
    2. Copy and paste the following code:
function screen_layout_columns() {
add_screen_option(
'layout_columns',
array(
'max'     => 4,
'default' => 1
)
);
}
add_action( 'admin_head-index.php', 'screen_layout_columns' );
  1. Change the number of max columns you want to have in options
  2. Change the default layout
  3. Save changes

That’s all there is. After you save changes, screen layout options will be back. Now navigate to your dashboard, locate Screen Options where you will find layout settings.

If you only need to force WordPress to show a certain amount of columns in your dashboard, without getting screen options back, you can do that with a slightly different code.

Since you’re already customizing the dashboard, you might be interested in adding a custom link to you dashboard or maybe even completely remove the welcome panel which you probably don’t even need.
