It is the best practice to keep your WordPress, as well as your themes and plugins updated. That means that you should always install the newest updates you come across, no matter if they’re automatic or you should update your files manually. Not only will you get the newest features, but you will install security updates.
But even those are completely good reasons to keep to the newest version of your themes and plugins, sometimes you just need an older version.
Reasons for that are different, but most of the time you will want an older version because the plugin or a theme function isn’t compatible with the newest WP version. In that case, updating would mean your plugin/theme wouldn’t work, and if you’re already in that situation, you will want to roll back to an older version.
There are two techniques of doing this.
Manually uploading theme and plugin files
No matter which theme or a plugin you have installed, if it has more than one version, you should be able to download and copy the one you want. For example, older version of plugins found in the WordPress repository can be found under the download link which looks something like this: https://wordpress.org/plugins/plugin-name/download/
- Download the version of the plugin/theme you want
- Connect to your FTP server
- Unzip the plugin folder
- Upload the content into plugins directory
Although updating or rolling back to an older version of the theme/plugin is relatively easy, there is an even simpler solution. Of course, there is a plugin which can help you keep track of your updates and let you roll back to any version you want in simply one click of a button.
WP Rollback plugin
This free plugin will allow you to easily roll-back to another version of your theme or a plugin, without searching for the older version, downloading and uploading the files manually.
- Go to Plugins-> Add New
- Search for “WP RollBack”
- Install and activate the plugin
- Go to plugin settings
- Select the version of the plugin/theme you want to roll back to
- Click “Confirm”
Easy as that. Just because this is so easy, it is important to keep an eye on your files. Rolling back to an older version might mean losing important changes and even losing files, so be sure to test the older version of the plugin and don’t forget to make backups.
This is it. No matter why you’re rolling back, this should help you change plugin/theme versions in a few clicks.
