Caitlin is an Arizona-based fashion enthusiast and beauty junkie blogging her favorites one photo at a time at A Little Dash of Darling. Born out of her lifelong love of fashion, her blog embodies her playfully feminine style as she experiments with trends and vibrant colors and prints. Her blog provides her readers daily inspiration on the latest styles and outfit pairings as well as easy and accessible beauty, travel, fitness and home decor tips.
When did you get an idea to launch your own blog and how important is it for you be online?
I started my blog a little over a year ago while in my third year of law school as a way to outsource my creativity and socialize with like-minded fashion-obsessed gals while digging my head in a book. Since then it has become a great resource of self-expression for me and a fun community of women in search of all things darling. Being present online has been invaluable for me as I have really enjoyed getting to know my readers.
Did you have someone help you make the website or did you do it by yourself?
I have worked with several talented web developers and graphic designers to help bring my site to life and I highly recommend finding one that fits your style and aesthetic.
I had actually been thinking about starting a blog for over a year before I took the plunge as I kept trying to gain the courage to put myself out there as well as to come up with the right name. I finally decided that there is no time like the present and I wrote down every word that I loved that I thought embodied my style and personality. I am always using the word “darling” to describe things I love, and that’s what I wanted my blog to be… a place to share all the things I loved. Thus, A Little Dash of Darling was born.
What kind of Theme do you use on your blog and what are the “must have” plugins for a blog?
I don’t have a theme as my site has been designed by a developer but a definite must-have plugin I think would be an Instagram widget. Being present on social media is so important for your business and although I was unable to focus on my Instagram while I was in law school, having the widget on my site helped let my readers know I was out there and where they could find me.
How much time do you spend blogging?
I am currently blogging full-time and try to spend most week days preparing content and responding to emails. If I get behind, my work tends to overflow into dinner time and I hate when it interferes with “QT” with my husband.
How do you promote your blog? Do you use social media channels to attract more visitors to your blog?
Social media is so important when it comes to promoting your content. When you work so hard on putting something together you want to be able to share that content with like-minded individuals, and social media is a great way to get it out there.
Is there a way to monetize (make money) through a blog?
What I love most about blogging is that the possibilities are endless. If you can dream it, you can do it. Some great ways to make money include affiliate links, sponsored posts, advertising, giveaways, video tutorials and event hosting.
Would you encourage other people to make their own blogs?
I would encourage other people to consider what makes them happy. If sharing those things with others is something they would enjoy then I say go for it. While blogging is time consuming and fashion blogging, more specifically, is somewhat of a vain pursuit that forces you to constantly compare yourself to others, if you can remain focused on you and what makes you happy, then it can be very fulfilling.
If you are thinking of starting a blog, find something you love to write about and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Although you may be welcoming the haters, your are also welcoming a sea of friendly people who will encourage you… and they make it all worth it. If you do decide to start a blog I recommend staying true to yourself and publish content consistently so your readers know when and what they can expect from you. Work hard and enjoy the ride!
