Please tell us something about yourself. Is blogging your profession or just a hobby?

A profession! I’ve been lucky enough to consider blogging my full-time profession for almost five years now.

When did you get an idea to launch your own website and how important is it for you be online?

My friend Erin and I got the idea back in 2008 and have been going strong since. We met while we were both working for a magazine publishing company in the Kansas City area. We quickly become friends and wasn’t until Erin sadly moved states away that we came up with the idea of a fitness blog—effectively marrying our love of fitness with our love of writing.
Just a couple of years after starting the site, I attended a fitness event where she met Kristen, who lives in Florida and was then an editor at an AOL fitness blog. Erin, Kristen and myself realized we had a similar attitude when it came to the FBG mission (and awesome ‘80s and ‘90s tunes), and soon, Kristen became a regular contributor to FBG before officially joining the crew in 2015.

Did you have someone help making the website or did you do it by yourself?

No way I could do it by myself! I have two business partners — Erin and Kristen — and we all run the sites together, writing, editing and managing the business. Then we also have a talented designer and web developer and contract writers. It takes a village! 🙂

The right domain name is important. How long did it take you to come up with the domain name for your website?

We spent weeks brainstorming ideas, but once we came up with Fit Bottomed Girls, we knew it was the right one. It actually popped in my head while I was at a Kansas City Royals’ baseball game. I texted it to Erin and the rest is FBG history!

What CMS (Content Management System) do you use on your blog/website? How hard is it to navigate within your CMS (making a new post, inserting images, moderating comments, etc.)?

We use WordPress and love how user-friendly it is.

How much time do you spend blogging?

I used to spend 40-50 hours a week blogging, but now that I have a three-month old, I’ve been working closer to 20 hours a week. I feel SO grateful to have such a great team and that kind of flexibility in my day and career!


How do you promote your website? Do you use social media channels to attract more visitors to your blog?

We are very active on pretty much all of the social media sites and use it to not just let followers know what new content we have, but also to interact with readers in real time.

Is there a way to monetize (make money) through a blog?

For sure! From ad networks to affiliates to working with brands directly for sponsored content, we’ve found that the more creative you can be the better. (And, of course, only work with brands you really do love — gotta keep it real!)

Would you encourage other people to make their own blogs?

Of course! Blogging isn’t just a “job” for me. Connecting with others and sharing my experience has brought so much to my life. From friendships to support to just having a place to express myself, I cannot imagine my life without FBG.
