A style blog where European chic meets West Coast sophistication, The August Diaries has been featured in InStyle and People StyleWatch magazine as well as on Who What Wear, on Vanity Fair’s Best Dressed Contest as an Editor’s Pick and in national newspapers. We have worked with brands such as Joe Fresh, Old Navy, 424 Fifth from Lord & Taylor, Forever 21 and Plenty.
I work in marketing, but I blog almost full time. Both professions give me income.
A friend of mine helped me build the website. I have basic website and coding knowledge but nothing that could built a website. I love using WordPress though, it is very user-friendly and easy to navigate.
The right domain name is important. How long did it take you to come up with the domain name for your blog?
It took a while. I actually changed my name after the first year to The August Diaries. It’s important to have a name you feel proud of and one that really reflects you and your style.
What kind of Theme do you use on your blog and what are the “must have” plugins for a blog?
I use Starkers theme. I love minimalistic websites, I think they look so chic. As for plugins, you should have an SEO plugin, a contact form plugin and a subscribe plugin. It’s also good to have Most Recent or Popular Posts plugins.
How much time do you spend blogging?
I usually write 3-4 posts a week, and each post can take 1-2 hours.
Yes, absolutely. Social media is so important to attract visitors. I use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Bloglovin’.
Is there a way to monetize (make money) through a blog?
Definitely. Blogs are now being used as a marketing tool for companies, and if you have a large enough following you can make quite a bit. RewardStyle is my favourite commission based website.
Would you encourage other people to make their own blogs?
Of course! It is so liberating to put your very first post out there for the world to see. Also, the people you meet through blogging, whether it’s online or in person, is well worth it. I’ve made some great friends and connections through my blog.
Photographs are so important. These days, blogging is like a mini editorial that people put out numerous times a week and photography makes or breaks a blog in my opinion. Invest some time in educating yourself on photography and figure out why you love your favourite blogger’s photographs (lighting, composition, bokeh effect?). When I first started, I used my iPhone (!) and now have graduated to a DSLR, but just a normal camera can work wonders even when edited using only iPhoto.
