Please tell us something about yourself. Is fashion blogging your profession or just a hobby?

I started WithLoveGabrielle.com as a creative channel while studying architecture and art history at the University of Toronto. Over the first 2 years the audience grew very fast and upon receiving a government grant in 2011 for business development, I started my own business and never looked back. In 2013, I had an angel investor come onboard and we’re in process of developing a number of exciting projects including a newly launched TheYouthSociety.com. For me, blogging started as a hobby and grew into a lucrative business that has given me an opportunity to live an entrepreneurial life.

When did you get an idea to launch your own blog and how important is it for you be online?

I launched WithLoveGabrielle.com in 2008. and TheYouthSociety.com in 2014. Being online is key to my works existence therefore being online is in my second nature. In digital sphere, if you’re not online effectively then you don’t exist.

Did you have someone help you make the website or did you do it by yourself?

All of the website development is done by except for graphics which are done my a freelance artist.

The right domain name is important. How long did it take you to come up with the domain name for your blog?

I first thought of a name and then decided to launch a site, not sure why but that was my initial thought process.

What kind of Theme do you use on your blog and what are the “must have” plugins for a blog?

Both of my sites are custom developed but use the groundwork of PageLines. I think that plugins are individual to every blog and the vision that the writer has.

What CMS (Content Management System) do you use on your blog? How hard is it to navigate within your CMS (making a new post, inserting images, moderating comments, etc.)?

I use WordPress and love it.

How much time do you spend blogging?

My days are usually 10 hours and when I’m not working I always catch myself thinking of ideas for content. As an entrepreneur, your mind is always on work which is why work becomes your life.

How do you promote your blog? Do you use social media channels to attract more visitors to your blog?

I do not actively work on promoting my site as all of the traffic is organic and generated by interest in content. Naturally, I am very active on Instagram, Twitter, Google +, Pinterest and Facebook but I never resort to advertising. When I do advertise to promote various client work, I like to use Twitter advertising as Facebook rarely produces any result.

Is there a way to monetize (make money) through a blog?

Absolutely, I’ve made an entire career from starting a blog. Like everything in life, it is a matter of how much time and effort you’re willing to invest. As with any business, it is never easy.

Would you encourage other people to make their own blogs?

Depending on your intentions. If you’re looking to start a blog because you want to receive gifts and party invites then absolutely not. If you want a creative channel that brings you joy then absolutely. At the end of the day, blogging heavily depends on writing and creativity and those are two elements that cannot be faked, you will have to do it otherwise it won’t work. I always tell people to consider the time commitment and what they want to gain from starting a blog.
