Hey there, this is Brad from Firstsiteguide.com, and in this video I’ll be showing you how to set up a Premium WordPress theme on your blog. We’ll start by connecting to the server with an FTP program. We’ll upload the theme and then activate the theme from within your dashboard. Let’s get started.
All right. So now that you’re getting more familiar with your WordPress blog, you’ve probably played around with the settings, and features, and maybe even some of the themes. WordPress has a bunch of free, open-source themes available, but what we’re talking about in this video is paid premium themes. A great example of this is the WordPress section of Themeforest.net. They have hundreds of premium themes that range from $40 to around $100. Most often, premium themes are better supported, get updates more often, and have unique features that aren’t available from a free theme. You can search through a site like this, find a theme that looks interesting, and then check it out by clicking on the “Live Preview” button.
Okay. So what do you do when you have your theme downloaded and ready to set up? You’ll have it on your computer in a folder, so we need to get it uploaded online into our blog’s theme folder. For this we’ll be using a free FTP program called Filezilla. So go ahead and pull up google.com and search for Filezilla, and it’s the top result right here. Once you’re on the website, click “Download Filezilla Client”. Find the “Show Additional” download options link, click there. And then for me, since I’m on a Windows computer, I’m going to go with the “Recommended Install” link right here.
All right. Great. Once you’ve walked through the installation, here’s what Filezilla will look like once you pull it up. The screen on your left is your home computer, and we’ll be using the screen on the right to connect to our web hosting server online where our blog is hosted. Go up to “File”, and then click on “Site Manager”. Once this box pops up, click on the “New Site” button, and give it a quick name. And then what we’re going to need to fill in here are the connection settings for our server. So for the host name, we’re going to add our domain name without the www. And then for the logon type, click this dropdown box and select “Normal”, and then enter the same username and password that can be found in your account management panel. Once you’ve done that, click on “Connect” below.
All right. Great. Now that we’ve connected to our hosting, I have my theme folder unpacked here on the left, so we need to navigate to our blog’s theme folder and get it uploaded. Begin by double-clicking on “Public.html”, and then the “WP Content Folder”, and then “Themes”. Click and drag your themes folder from the left to the right onto the server. It’ll take a moment or two for it to upload. Then we’ll head back to our blog’s dashboard, hover over the “Appearance” tab, and click on “Themes”. Now you’ll see the premium theme we just installed. You’ll hover over it and click on the “Activate” button. And that’s it. Now your new premium theme has been activated. You can click to open up your main domain in a new tab to check out the changes.
And really that wraps things up. As always, if you have any questions or need help, please visit us at Firstsiteguide.com. We’d be happy to help you out. Take care and enjoy your new blog.
