Hey there, this is Brad from Firstsiteguide.com, and in this video I’ll be walking you through how to install the Yoast SEO WordPress plugin. And then I’ll also show you on a live blog post how to change your title and description. So let’s get right into it. Okay, so we’re here in our WordPress dashboard and we’re going to need to go over to the “Plugin” section. So look over here on the left, hover over the “Plugin” section and then click on “Add new.” This will bring up this section where you’ll click on the right-hand side where it says “Search plugins”, and type in “Yoast SEO” and then hit “Enter.”
Like I was saying before, the Yoast SEO plugin allows you to change many different SEO settings throughout your blog, so you can ensure that Google has the best settings that represent you and your new blog. Here’s the plugin on my left here. Click on the “Install now” button and then click on “OK” to confirm the install. Once installed, you look right here for the “Activate plugin” link and then click it. All right, excellent. The Yoast WordPress SEO plugin has been installed. Now, let’s head back over to the post section. We’re going to hover over posts and then click on “All posts.” Here is the post that I want to edit, the one about my trip to downtown Chicago.
So I’m going to hover over and then click “Edit” and then wait for it to load up. Alright, here’s the title and the content of my blog post. What I want to do right now though is scroll down to the Yoast SEO section here. It will show you a snippet preview and then have the settings down here to adjust your title and your meta description. For the title it’s ideal to keep it at a maximum of 65 characters, while the description can be up to 150 characters.
You want to ensure your title includes a keyword, too, and is enticing, while the description describes what your blog post is about, but also builds up some curiosity so the searcher clicks your listing. For the title, I’m going to put, My epic adventure to downtown Chicago, Illinois. Must see. And for my description, I’m going to put in, I recently took a trip to Illinois and head up to downtown scene. Boy was I surprised at the nightlife and cafes I found. Click to read more about it.
Those are both relevant and described what my blog post is about, as well as entice the reader enough to get them to click and read through my post. All you need to do from here is to scroll back up and click on the “Update” button on the right-hands side to update your blog post and save the Yoast SEO settings. Now, Google will display those details within a search engine once it comes back and indexes the changes. And that’s really all the risk to it.
